Who’s To Blame
By Mario L Phillips
Should I’ve have given up so easily my future without an education.
Because I had a learning disability and found it very difficult
To overcome on my own or at all.
Even with the necessary help provided.
Did I give up too easily?
Have every teacher who failed to educate me.
When I was asking for their help to blame for my failures,
How my life turned out.
Am I using teachers as an escape goat?
Blaming them for all my mistakes and failures and me
Giving up on education so easily because I felt,
No teacher went out there way to teach me,
Or even cared enough to do what it took to help educate me,
So that I could’ve better prepared myself for this big ol’ world that awaited me.
That would’ve eventually swallow me up whole apologetically without remorse.
Who’s to blame?
I could equally disperse the blame out
Or take responsibility and admit,
Never leave it to chance,
My future or the future of my unborn seed to someone else’s hands to chance
Except my own.
A Life Wasted
By Mario L. Phillips
Even though I’m constantly being afflicted
by the many horrors of the death row culture.
Where morals run low, and mortality constantly flows
Like screams from a horror show.
Where doors constantly close
And tomorrow no one ever knows for sure.
I often feel something nearer,
Other than my constant fears of “a life wasted”
My life suspended in time,
Free falling like dust,
Collected from nostalgia
(Old memories) left behind,
Where constant thoughts and ideas come and go
Like a wishing well.
Free to roam as it pleases.
While teasing me with false realities and images
Like an old dilapidated house full of everything you could ever want
Or imagine, but just cannot touch
Leaving me longing for a life once lived
(Once lived) and enjoyed in ways one couldn’t possibly
Understand or imagine.
Distant memories of a glass once filled but now half empty
Like old shoes,
Worn out with holes in the bottom
Where every time you wear them, where there’s water,
Your feet get wet, and tear holes
In the bottom of your socks
Shoes too big to be filled or worn by someone with smaller feet.
