On top of his award nominated and winning (Pushcart, PEN America, Best American Essays, Today’s Christian Living, Mend Journal, etc.) writing Ignacio Carrillo volunteers as a certified Healthcare Peer Educator, Yogi for Special Needs Individuals, Civics Peer Educator, Bilingual Translator, and GED Tutor. Carrillo sits on the board of various social justice advocacy groups: Prison Health News, College Guild, among others. He is a member of the Society of Professional Journalists and Lawyer’s Guild (incarcerated member group). He is studying for his Bachelor’s degree through the Augustana Prison Education Project. His first book, “Convict Chronicles: Welcome to the Mindfuck,” (a how-to-avoid-institutionalization-self-help guide) is scheduled for publication in late 2024. As a decorated veteran and devout Christian he hopes his work, in some small way, can begin to make-up for some of the harm he’s caused.
