In Our World Today
By Seaga Gillard

Upon birth my nakedness of not knowing the truth
Lead me into mistakes
I felt the hardships of the world at an early age
And at the bottom of the pit
I struggled to find my way
In a civilization separated by
Socialism, Capitalism and Classism
Still lingers the dark powers
Of hate against other races
But in the distance there is
A faint glimpse of prevailing
In our world today

The Harshest Punishment
By Seaga Gillard

Nobody knows how I feel inside
These fifteen minute phone calls
Ain’t enough time
When I hear my mother’s voice
I try to make her smile
On this lonely road she;s all I have
Sorrow faces behind glass doors
Of death row
Hollow cries each night of a man who can’t
Travel this journey no more
To see your loved ones gone without
Saying goodbye
Even friends disappear as
Time passes by
I’ve seen men try to take their own lives
Those who have succeeded
Their souls roam the walkways
Every eerie night
This ain’t no lie about the reality
Of our condemned lives
Yet the feeling burning inside reminds me
Every day that I will survive
The mental and physical hardships of
The hardest punishment of mankind

31 Years
By Seaga Gillard

Although he spent 31 years
Deprived of his dignity and freedom
Couldn’t read or write but still a human being
Tricked by those who was sworn to uphold the law
Into signing his life into the belly of the beast

31 years of innocent tears
When you look into his face
It wasn’t broken by sadness
But the truth always gave him strength
While labeled a death row inmate

In this beautiful land with a two teir system
Where in the ghetto is pain and Hollywood is fame
Yet on the darkest streets the brightest lights rise to fame

I cannot yield to strive
Although being black seems to be our first crime
After 31 years he kept his head high
Through these turbulent waters I will not drown
Reading his story gave me inspiration
Through my ongoing hard times.
