Living Under the Belly of the Beast

A guy moves into my section from another section in the prison. Right away your antennas go up because you have to wonder why he is leaving his section in the first place. Usually, it means he has had trouble, or he is trouble.

He moves into a bunk right behind my table in the dayroom. He comes around a couple times. He starts to stop once in a while and sit down at the table making small talk. So, I ask one day on the way to chow, “What brings a man like you to a Texas prison?” “Well,” he said, “Do you believe a man can be innocent?” “Of course,” I said. Then he begins to explain about the ten-year-old girl who lied on him about sexually abusing her. How he took a plea deal and pled guilty to a lesser sentence. He would have gotten a lot more time due to the fact that it was a continuous assault. “Stop,” I told him. “Don’t say another word”. I told him to take his story somewhere else. Not to ever come around me again.

Texas state prisons are full of these guys. This guy was supposed to be a professional in the world. A doctor or a nurse or something. These other men walk with this guy. Eat with this guy. Laugh with this guy. All along knowing this guy continuously raped this ten-year-old child, (or don’t care to know). There are so many sexual predators in the system. These men step over the fact as if it was a job description. The man is a serial child rapist.

That’s just one essence of the prison population. Let’s not forget murders…drug addicts…thieves…etc…

I met a guy here in TDCJ that is on an assault case. His previous conviction was on a murder. Him and I exchanged paperwork. Meaning you show your court documents to prove you’re not a sexual predator. He begins to tell me the story behind the murder he committed. How he was dating this woman, and they were in a shared apartment with the woman’s sister. This guy says he came into the dining area where his girlfriend was sitting and walked in on her making communication with the sister’s boyfriend who was on the couch in the adjoining room. He said the guy on the couch was masturbating and she was enticing it by her actions. When it was finally the two of them in the apartment, he went into a rage and stabbed the girl multiple times. He left and came back. Saying he was worried the woman wasn’t dead. He told me he tried to cut the woman’s head from her body to make sure she was dead. This person is on my cell block. When you come in contact with this person you will meet one of many personalities he has. He is extremely dangerous. The man is a killer.

I was assigned to the pot room in the kitchen when I first got to the unit. One of my coworkers was here for murder. He told the story of how he was facing death row. He could plea bargain and get life without parole. He chose life. How often do you get the opportunity to pick someone’s brain that has had the chance to choose life or death? So, I ask him what made him take the life without parole. “Why not just get it over with?” He said he didn’t do it for him. He chose life because he still had young kids who would be able to visit him, and he would still be a part of their lives. The man had his story down. I didn’t believe a word of it. He was terrified of what he will face once his time does come for his death. He is a coward killer.

This walk-through state prison may take years to complete. This walk will reveal some of the most horrific human beings existing in this life. If one takes the time and takes a good hard look across a dayroom, he can easily spot the demons across the room. They are right there in plain sight.

Those of us who rebuke this behavior instead of celebrating it should stand strong and know this walk-through prison too shall pass. We stand at a crossroads in this life. We are being allowed to see the evils of this world for knowledge and enlightenment. When we do go forward from this experience, we will have the tools to discern these individuals back in society. I believe this will be a gift given for a purpose. For now–stay the path. Evil is easy to find. Seek, instead, the righteous.
