Hello. My name is Kenneth Andrus, I am twenty-three years old, and there are many reasons I write. I want to be an author so bad my toes hurt. I write for more reasons to breathe. I write because I don’t catch feelings – I usually give them away. I write because I believe in love at first sight, although I don’t approve of it. I’ve been writing stories since I was nine when I first realized that it was the only time I could lie and get away with it. I write when I’m bored, scared, hungry, elated, angry, excited, or sleeping. While incarcerated, I, on a whim, designed a Penitentiary Dictionary of Slang where I compiled about 115 examples of my unit’s slang in dictionary format complete with pronunciation guides and examples.

My favorite author is Patrick Ness and despite loving his book “More Than This”, my favorite book is “I’ll Give You the Sun” by Jandy Nelson. Besides that, I believe ice cream is divine, as in manna from the freezer section, r can’t dance despite really wishing I could, I dabble in playing the violin, and I love “Calvin and Hobbes”. On my unit, Torres Unit, we have a tutoring program which is currently the only one of its kind in Texas. In this program, we help other incarcerated individuals get their G.E.D./H.S.E. (high school equivalency) degrees. I tutor the Reasoning through Language Arts part of the program. Besides that, I am in the planning stages of starting a creative writing class because I want to give back to my inside community from the inside as well as from the outside. In the envelope, I have included the dictionary I mentioned earlier as well as my short stories “To Die Is Gain” and “Oh, Brother.” Thank you for taking the time to read this letter. Any advice or feedback would be greatly appreciated and will put me one step closer to realize my dream of being a writer.
