I didn’t start writing poetry until I came into prison. I used to write hip hop music, but I grew out of that once I got older and started learning more about the world. I used to view poetry as being soft. When I say soft, I mean that I didn’t think poems could hit hard enough to move someone’s heart. The problem was that I had always read someone else’s poetry instead of hearing it in their own words. Then I grasped fully the weight of poems and the effect a good poem can have on someone.
I write short stories, too. I’ve always been a writer since I was young. I used to read a lot of comic books and books based off my favorite video games and movie franchises. Then I tried writing my own short stories and it took off from there. In my sophomore year in high school, I took a creative writing class, and it changed my writing life. But because I was so young and I was still trying to find myself, I fell off from writing for years to come. It wasn’t until I got into county jail did I begin writing again because I had so much time on my hands. Then once I came into prison, I got into a poetry class and discovered the art of poetry. I haven’t looked back since.
