A Letter to Younger Me
By Andre Collier

Dear Younger Me,
I hope you get this letter in time,
Before you embrace the streets
And embark on a life of crime.
No amount of money is worth your freedom
So cherish every moment you have,
Compared to a lifetime in jail
Living poor is really not that bad.
You’re actually very smart
Just apply yourself more in school,
Stop being disruptive in class
And learn how to follow the rules.
I really hope you listen
If not you have troubling times ahead,
From juvenile to state prison
Then you’ll graduate to the Feds.
It’s just this graduation
Won’t come with a diploma and a prom,
It’s yard and count time
And missing your daughter being born.
So much life you will miss
Time you can never get back,
Those you thought were your friends
They will stab you in the back.
They will fold under pressure
And leave you to bare the weight,
To grow old in a cold cell
Will surely be your fate.
Please when you get this
Start to make the necessary changes.
Or you will be like me
An older you forever trapped in these cages…
