Making Change Stick
By Joseph Martinez
For change to last, we’ve gotta be motivated and believe in ourselves.
This is true: whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right.
Real change is different from wanting relief from consequences.
When we’re in pain, it’s only natural to think,
I’ll do anything to avoid this feeling again.
Consequences can motivate us to change.
We can get external motivation from: Someone making us do something;
Not having access to the behavior; or a temporary condition that leads us not to do it.
But if we want the change to stick, we need internal motivation –
Meaning, we’re changing because we want it
(not because someone is making us).
