Stuck in Limbo
By David Hosley
One more day in the SHU,
Carts pass by propelled by pushers you wish were you,
The sun rises quietly as you imagine what you could do,
The echoes of conversations outside my window,
Leave footprints on my eardrum like a sticky floor hindering tiptoes,
People stroll by unaware of the soul stuck in limbo,
Knocks on plexiglass go unanswered,
Loneliness spreads through the ether like cancer,
No personal belongings make it hard to pamper,
Colgate and lotion in sandwich bags from the homies,
Some semblance of normal livin’ is accomplished only,
As I dream, dead to the world like a zombie,
Peanut butter crackers & water stay the hunger pangs,
Every request for assistance meets a lie that leaves my soul stained,
Who needs mental health services when I’ve got pain to help me through my pain?
Dear Young Man
By David Hosley
Stand up straight & speak tall,
for you are a soldier. A soldier for whom? For
the babies, for the family, & for you. Let your
mind be known but don’t overspeak. Take
what’s yours but don’t horde & keep. If
they show you love, don’t think you’re weak,
just show some back. When they overstep
don’t hesitate to snap & keep balance in
check.
Don’t be verbose, just watch instead
cause a man of many words is nothing
more than an empty head. Keep your hands
busy but be slow to act because a man
who moves in haste is always quick to
overreact. I know you wanna stay down
but learn yourself first & the rest will
come back around.
