Before I realized my value as a storyteller, creator, and peer mentor, I often worried that mental illness and prison would make for a very short epitaph. Now I know my unique life experience is as powerful a tool for change as any degree – but only if I use it.

Helping people graduate betterment programs, get their GEDs and in some cases, learn how to read, helped me learn how to communicate knowledge, how to plan and achieve goals, and how to guide decision making. For it is primarily through the transfer (or translation) of legitimacy achieved by the cultural impact of all forms of storytelling by which personal agency is developed and restored in the individual no matter the setting or the stage of life.

Thus, it is my mission here at MB6, and beyond, to invest in the agency of all affected by incarceration, that our security and common welfare may be rediscovered in communities revitalized by citizens returning from prison which enhanced education, creative expression, skills, and entrepreneurship.

The more adversity we’ve known alone, the more peace we can imagine together.
