Accessory To Murder
By Bonnelle Vang
Since the terrible cold fell upon the spring tree,
it has yet to bloom another petal.
The insolent and disobedient being is an untamed creature,
its bark solidified and petrified against all odds.
Its wood aggravated the leaves for
it would agonize all those who left.
Before, the branches snapped and piled under
effortlessly with the snap of a finger.
Now, it seems to have held on in fear
of losing more than a limb.
In the night, the leaves resemble a still raging fire
where no smoke cannot breathe.
Such is so that the ground beneath the tree is flat
where no man cannot hear.
Stand by….

Look at me now,
I wished to say to your face
Twenty years ago
Five years old,
And I never imagined a man
Could leave it all behind.
Fifteen years ago
Ten years old,
And I never imagined a man
Because it was hard to do so.
Ten years ago
Fifteen-year-old,
And I never imagined a man
So low, alone; ‘cause there you were.
Look at me now,
I wished to say to your face
That I made something of myself,
Gave worth to this ’something’
You abandoned; but I didn’t.
Five years ago
Twenty years old,
And I never imagined a man
Could love me better than you.
Today,
Twenty-five years old,
I wished to say to your face:
Look at me now.
But I never imagined…
I could be worse than you.
Don’t look now
Because you chose—
Right… all those—
Years ago.
Today,
Serving an eleven-year sentence,
I think I can imagine a man
Could leave it all behind.
If he left himself first.
