A couple of weeks ago I woke up at my usual time, 5 am, got dressed, made a cup of coffee, sat on my bed, sipped my coffee, and thought about what I planned to do for the day. Several days before a guy in 1HU asked me if I could meet him on Friday morning, at the library, so he could ask me a few questions about our emerging adult campaign. It was cold outside and my first thought was Roy-El is probably not even going to show up, but I told him I’d meet him, so being a man of my word, I decided to keep the appointment.

At 8 am, I walked out of my cell onto the top walk and was greeted by my friend Doyne. He was headed to the library, too, to electronically file a letter to the U.S. District Court concerning a pending civil case. He asked me to look over the letter to make sure everything that needed addressed was addressed. So with letter in hand, I read the letter as we walked down the stairs. I was almost finished reading it as I reached the last steps. Then all of the sudden I was flying in the air and landed hard, with a thud, at the bottom of the steps.

Lying flat on my face I heard Doyne say, “Zach, are you alright?”

I didn’t answer but got up off the floor and handed him the letter. Then, without a word, I walked outside. Doyne asked again, “Zach, are you alright? You fell pretty hard.”

This time I said, “Yeah, there was two steps left instead of one.”

I walked to the library and thought to myself, What just happened? and Damn my wrist is really hurting. When I saw Roy-El I told him what happened as I rubbed my wrist. I told him about how the campaign was going but found it hard to think of anything other than I couldn’t afford to have a broken wrist.

When I left the library, I decided I needed to have an x-ray so I self-declared an emergency and went to medical. After about a thirty-minute wait I saw a nurse who wrapped my wrist, gave me a bag for ice, and told me she would send me a medical pass for Monday to get an x-ray. I didn’t get an x-ray, but my wrist is really sore, but not broken.

Something I carelessly did all the time, read emails, legal mail, store lists, etc., almost resulted in me being seriously injured. Since I wasn’t I will not focus on anything other than walking downstairs.
