Learn from Me
By Ricardo Marchan
You can learn a lot from me,
I’m the perfect example of what not to be.
Please… Pause. Pay Attention.
Education is the key,
it’s the only way to stay free,
the exact opposite of me.
Stay in school, get a degree, learn from me.
I ran the streets,
tried to make gang banging and drug dealing my profession.
Now I got a life sentence with no possessions.
Any questions?!
I hope you’re learning a valuable lesson.
Lost a lot of good jobs,
never owned a house,
just a Hi-Point and a Smith & Wesson.
You can learn a lot from me,
I’m exactly what not to be.
Please… Pause. Pay Attention.
Don’t be like me and come to prison,
be the opposite of me,
listen to the voice of reason.
To make sure you don’t fail,
listen to the words on this paper — don’t bail.
Look at my bad decisions,
Keep in mind what you’re missing,
the perfect example of what not to be.
See… you just learned a lot from me.
A Stranger
By Ricardo Marchan
I didn’t know you, a stranger.
You treated me like I was stellar.
You didn’t judge me, you gave me hope,
you helped me without question.
You showed me I was worthy.
You provided a new outlook on life,
a renewal of the mind.
For that, I will never be able to repay you.
A stranger you were yesterday, but today,
you are someone I can trust and call my friend.
All praise The Most High.
Cease Judgement
By Ricardo Marchan
Please don’t judge me by my crime,
judge my creative mind in time.
Don’t judge my poor decisions,
they do not define me with precision.
Don’t judge me by my past,
memories we hold steadfast.
Don’t judge my adversities for they strengthen my abilities.
Don’t judge my old lifestyle,
that’s no longer in my file.
What you can judge is my future,
I’ll make a difference in the world, humble and mature.
Please remember,
cease all judgement.
Forgotten Soul
By Ricardo Marchan
In many cases it’s true, now I know, life’s on hold.
Don’t have to be shrewd, behind bars, one must be bold.
Dismissed from society and thrown in a cell,
A nightmare worse than living in hell.
When I think about my friends from the hood,
I realize they don’t care as they should.
It’s funny how the homies in the street…
Forgot all about me cause I’m facing defeat.
Everything was great when I was winning the race,
Now that I’m locked away they can’t show their face.
A story to be told, two natural lives without parole,
Pledged loyalty to the code,
Stick to the code don’t ever fold.
Living in this world as a forgotten soul.
Life’s Deck
By Ricardo Marchan
Can’t explain the meaning of life;
Trials and tribulations, struggle and strife.
I was a boy in this world with no mother nor father,
No rational explanation for their absence – didn’t even bother.
Regardless of consequence, I expressed pain through my actions.
Dissatisfaction from family, turned to a street faction.
These thugs relate to the pain,
Depended on liquor and drugs to deal with life’s bittersweet rain.
With no mother in my life,
I couldn’t express what love for a woman meant,
Was fearful of rejection, failure, abandonment.
With no father in my life,
I didn’t understand what it is to be a man, partner and friend.
So with cards I’ve been dealt,
I’m sittin at the table of life ready to cut the deck
and create my own fate.
Today’s Gift
By Ricardo Marchan
Today’s gift
May never see tomorrow,
A mystery,
There’s no written guarantee.
Yesterday is history,
No sweet tea.
Can’t predict the future, can’t change the past,
Just the present moment and must treat it as my last.
I must use this blessing wisely, for it will soon pass by,
be lost forever, part of His grand design.
Exercise compassion, grace and mercy,
Help the fallen to their feet,
be a friend to the friendless,
make an empty life complete.
The unkind things I did may never be undone,
But the acts of kindness bring meaning under the sun.
