He stood staring at the chair in front of the window. It was not a chair out of place because it was where it had always been. It was where his grandmother had placed it, and it was where she always sat.
As he stood there pondering on the two items harmoniously adjacent to each other, he couldn’t help but notice their natural alignment. The way in which the chair seemed to run liken to a window that it never faced, and how whenever his grandmother sat in it, neither did she. She seemed to deliberately lean out toward the window from the side of that chair, and it was a behavior that would always cause him pause.
Well, today, he was not to be pacified by such vagueness. In fact, today, he was thinking about sitting in that chair, and the more he thought about…the better the idea sounded. “Why not?” He said out loud, “I honesty doubt if she would even mind!”
He gave the room a once over just to make sure that he was still alone, and then he sat down in the chair and leaned out toward the window. He tried to do it exactly as he had seen his grandmother, and right before the silliness of his act prevailed, he heard something.
“How can you even say that?” Asks a voice, and as sudden as that one spoke, another chimed in.
“Because it makes sense, that’s how!”
The child immediately turned away from the window and scanned the room for the owner of the two speakers, but there were none to be found. It was then that he stood and peered out over the window ledge, but no one was there.
Against his better judgement, he sat back down and leaned out as he had before, and just like before, the voices began. Only this time, the boy had a better sense of who the antagonist was.
The one harsher in tone, spoke first. “Out of all the human beings who have been born and raised in this house, only one has ever been endowed with an inner ear!”
“Yes!” Exclaimed the other, “And for a time that was true, but that is no longer the case. Surely, you can see that?”
“Well,” began the other one, “I do not see that, and we do not even know if it is us he is hearing!”
It is at this point, that the boy becomes a little more unnerved. He cannot help but wonder where the voices are coming from. Moreover, whom they are talking about? Before he knows it, he has spoken.
“Hello!” He utters, scarcely believing what he is attempting to do. “Hello,” he says again, “Is someone there…can you guys hear me?” There was an unusually long silence, so much so that he began to question whether he was losing his mind.
It was then, that the voices started speaking directly to him. “Yes Michael,” says the one, “We can hear you just fine, and no, you are not losing your mind!” The child sits stunned unable to respond, but they seem to anticipate his reaction because they continue to speak with him.
“My name is Desire,” sputters the one.
“And I am Intelligence,” utters the other. “We are from amongst the earliest of creation, and we are strategically placed to impart benefit upon those deemed worthy of our interaction.”
“Your grandmother was the first in your bloodline to be chosen, and now it seems that you are next!”
