Dear Reader,
Hi, my name is Zachary Smith. I am active in criminal justice reform. I want to bring public awareness to my campaign to “Raise the Age of Majority to 21” and change the law, giving Emerging Adults an opportunity to be resentenced and/or paroled. I am attacking LWOP sentences on two fronts, through the Missouri Legislature and the courts (current case pending in the Cole County Circuit Court: Zachary A. Smith v. Kelly Morriss, Case No. 25AC-CC00681).
At nineteen, I was charged with 1st degree murder and armed criminal action. After three jury trials, I was convicted and sentenced to LWOP and ninety-nine years. That was thirty years ago.
Instead of wasting my time watching the “Jerry Springer Show,” or sports, gambling, playing games, or doing and/or selling drugs, I spent my time working on rehabilitating myself and transformed myself into a mature, responsible adult. I set goals for personal growth, read self-help books, and made plans designed to direct the course of my life, shaping and strengthening my self-concept, character, and personality.
I wrote and published five books—known as Smith’s Guides. (See titles on Amazon.com.) I’ve also earned a paralegal, with distinction, along with several advanced degrees.
But all of my effort and accomplishments are futile and mean nothing because there is no path for me to ever be considered for release. I am marked as an incorrigible man, a monster who cannot be rehabilitated.
I need the missing ingredient, publicity. I need your help to spread the word about my campaign to “Raise the Age of Majority to 21.” I need your help to shine a little light on this important social justice issue.
All the best,
Z.A. Smith
